Happy New Year 2010 and Angel's Corner Year 2009 Update

Hello to all and welcome back to our Angel’s Corner Update

I would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year filled with love, good health and lots of hope for a better world.

I would also like to apologize for being away during 2009 and not being able to update you on our contributions. Unfortunately, I've had some family and personal issues that have prevented me from writing, but is does not mean that we stopped the contributions.

• The Angel’s Corner continues to support our local community centre, York Community Services. This time the money will be allocated to special project in their new satellite location, which will allow them to expand their services to more communities. The money will be used on a specific project dedicated to seniors, the frail and elderly - not only because they are an essential part of our communities and families, but also because they need to be given special recognition. At the same time York Community Services will make this a special project to remember, by honouring, our friend and colleague Ana Sofia Nascimento, RSW, MSW Senior’s Worker (May her soul rest in peace) who passed away at the early age of 34. She dedicated her life by working tirelessly for the welfare of seniors. I had the honor and privilege of both working with her, and to have called her my best friend. She was the best Social Worker I have ever known. Her dedication and guidance has helped me become a better person and has inspired me to pursue a career of my own in Social Work! I will always miss her.

Just to remind you, and for those who have not read my previous updates, York Community Services is a pioneer in their field. They are also an integrated and charitable multi-disciplinary agency in Toronto, where all services are provided free of charge under one roof and one administration.

• The Angel’s Corner continues to support entrepreneurs through Kiva. In 2009 we were able to sponsor 12 more small businesses in a variety of countries (click on the link for a detailed portfolio) I'm very happy to say we now have a total of 26 entrepreneurs!!!. We feel very strongly that because of the contributions to this organization, we (You; our customers and GAMMA) are helping in a real and a very tangible way to make the world a better place.

• Another project the Angel’s Corner supported in 2009 involved a group of students from a University in Venezuela. The students had to do a project for a community work assignment to be able to graduate. This specific group chose a small and very needy organization called “ Centro de Recuperacion Nutricional Infantil Dr. Pastor Oropeza” an organization who's very means of survival depends entirely on donations. This organization is the only one of its kind in the city of San Cristobal, and dedicates its efforts to helping undernourished children. The kids range in age between 2 months and 6-years-old who are or in a high Psycho-social risk due to the lack of nourishment. The Institution also provides extensive comprehensive care to their families to help them understand and cope with this condition with the capability of providing hospitalization for about 20 kids and continuous ambulatory services -- all provided free of charge!!!

I was personally involved with this project. I visited the facilities, met with the doctors, nurses, parents with their sick children, students and administrators. We discussed strategies to raise funds and awareness among the communities and the population about the importance of supporting this institution. I am proud to say that we exceeded the expectations and were able to provide them with much needed supplies and a great deal of community support for the future. I must mention that everyone involved was aware that it was thanks to OUR CUSTOMERS that we were able to help with this project.

Thanksgiving Celebrations and October Angel's Corner Update

Hello to all and welcome back to our Angel's Corner Update

We wanted to kick off the holiday season with the Thanksgiving celebrations, here in Canada on October 13 and in the US on November 27.

What an appropriate time to give thanks: to God for giving us the opportunity to help others through The Angel's Corner, to our Customers for their continuous contributions, to Plan Canada for their great donor support, they have showed a great deal of professionalism and transparency with the Projects we have been supporting, a Big Shout Out to them! To Kiva for their amazing job, keep up the good work! And to all the agencies that are trying to make life better on these difficult times in the world.

“Since I started farming I have been growing maize and realized low yields and now I have planted groundnuts and realized a good yield. I will advise other farmers to grow this crop” said Mr. Dube from Kubatana ward.

We continue working with Plan Canada, this time we have chosen a project in the African Republic of Zimbabwe; whose people are living under extremely difficult political, economic and social conditions; poverty and unemployment is soaring and where an acute shortage of food has been well publicized. 56 percent of the population lives on less than US$ 1 per day and 1 million people depend on food aid. So, we though that a good way to invest some money will be give people the tools to help not only themselves as individuals, but their families and their community with an Agricultural Training and Seed Provision which will provide long-term solutions to these problems. The project objectives are: increase the number of food secure families, reduce the number of undernourished children, increase the number of families realizing increased disposable income and increase the number of families in Plan communities who access sustainable financial services. With your support we were able to secure farmer training for 50 people; this will equip them with the knowledge and skills in farming to improve their agricultural production. Households that follow good farming methods will achieve good yields that ensure food security for them with surplus for sale. With part of the donations we also secure additional funding for the Provision of Seed for 40 extra people and their families; this means that farmers have seed input to plant in their fields. Farmers in the rural areas are not able to access adequate agricultural inputs due to shortage on the market and when available the prices are way beyond the reach of the majority. Some of the participant families are able to produce peanut butter and oil from sunflower, which improves their nutrition status. Also this project allows them to work near their homes reducing overall cost and workloads, particularly for women and families are more able to send their children to school or pay for healthcare.

Once again we continue supporting entrepreneurs through Kiva. This time we were able to add 7 more, for a grand total of 14, in many countries and a variety of businesses - go through the link to visit our detailed portfolio with Kiva - It is amazing to know that with a little bit of help, you can change so many lives.

Lastly, The Angel's Corner had also given another donation to our Local Community Centre - York Community Services - to help with their new satellite location, to expand their services to more communities. YCS is a pioneer in their field and is an integrated and charitable multi-disciplinary agency in Toronto, where all services are provided free of charge under one roof and one administration. Their services are targeted to:

· Families at risk – primarily single mothers and their children
· Immigrants and newcomers
· Seniors and the frail elderly
· Adults with developmental disabilities
· People with serious and persistent mental illness
· Youth
· Homeless or under-housed
· And others facing barriers due to language, race, culture, or low literacy- with the overall goal of building healthy families, individuals and communities.

We feel privileged and honored that you are giving us your support and that we are able to see how far we have gone and how many lives we have been able to touch in such a short period of time.

May 2008 Angel's Corner Update

Hello everyone and Happy Mother’s Day! - Here we are with new exciting updates.

It is May, Spring has finally arrived and it is the perfect time to celebrate not only Mother’s Day, but the great support The Angel’s Corner keeps receiving.

Once again we have partnered up with Plan Canada to support a very important and timely cause. Part of your contributions has been allocated to support an HIV and AIDS campaign in the African country of Burkina Faso, a country we do not hear much about but is in great need of help. Unlike most HIV & AIDS program approaches, Plan Canada's is all child-centered.

With your support, now they have Hope.

This project provides enhanced access to medical and long-term psychosocial support for children and their families affected by HIV & AIDS, with a portion designated to prevent the infection of children during childbirth. It also facilitates vital legal, financial and practical support to child-led households orphaned by AIDS.

Your support to the Angel’s Corner for this project would allow the Plan to provide health care and medicine needed to prevent HIV transmission from mother to child during delivery for 14 families. This project will also provide activities closely linked to voluntary counseling and testing services targeting both parents, to overall improvement of maternal health services, to family planning counseling and provision, to health care support for parents living with AIDS, and to counseling and support to ensure safer and exclusive breast feeding.



As we had previously pledged, we continue supporting Kiva.org. We started by supporting 3 Entrepreneurs; now with your help we are able to sponsor four (4) more, for a grand total of seven (7) entrepreneurs, empowering those businesses in their effort towards economic independence. - Click on the Kiva logo to see them all in detail - This is what is called a gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for helping us make more dreams come true.



We are very proud to announce that our daughters wanted to celebrate Mother’s day in a very unique and special way. There is an amazing Hospital in town call "Sick Kids." They have a fundraising walk in support of Pediatric Brain Tumor Research called Meagan’s Walk (read her story), and it will also provide pediatric health care at Sick Kids, the only hospital in Canada with a program dedicated to this specialized area of research. People from all over the world come here. We decided that not only would the Angel’s Corner give a donation, but the whole family will participate by walking together with all their supporters, including Meagan’s mother this May 11th.

We do our best to practice the popular saying: "Talk the talk and walk the walk." But that is not the only walk we will be doing this season. On June 1st we will also be participating in another Walkathon, this time to support our Local Community Centre – York Community Services – to raise funds for their new satellite community health center which will provide health, legal, counseling, housing and support services for low income families.
